Here are four Alva Day views from March, 1948 labelled "North" "South" "East" and "West". The east and west views seem to be from the same spot, down by the Mount Hood Railroad tracks, right near where the new Mt. Hood Railroad shop is located. It looks to me like he moved to the other side of the track to capture the north and south views. The construction is captioned "A. Eng'r's Pump." Given the amount of concrete they poured, I suspect that whatever it was, it is still there.

Irrigation Flume, 1910

This 1910 Benjamin Gifford image is part of a set of albums which were given to the Hood River Commercial Club by William McMurray, the General Passenger Agent for the Oregon Rail & Navigation Company and Southern Pacific Company Lines. It shows the bridge taking an irrigation canal across one of the branches of the Hood River. I suspect one of you can identify the spot for us.

This image of a 1910 meeting of the the Hood River Boosters Club is from Arline and Max Moore's album. Mrs. Moore identifies the location as "Parkers Restaurant, present Apple Blossom Cafe." This space has held many restaurants over the years-- more recently it was Yayas Greek Restaurant (1990s), and of course it is now known as The Trillium. Please fill in the blanks on other businesses that have been at this spot.

Harry Dewitt poses proudly in front of his new garage in May 1918. I suspect his car is new too.

The address is 215 Cascade, now the Columbia Center For the Arts. We saw it during the same era in this image.

Here's the HRFD in action putting out a brush fire near the Jaymar mill. It looks like the fire has gotten into piles of debris from the mill's operations. The locomotive is a bonus.

I can't help but notice the man on the hose has a cigarette dangling from his lips as he stands near that dry grass. I suppose he's in a good position to put out any new fire he starts.

I don't know the exact location of this January 1947 image, but I suspect someone will recognize it. It looks like on of the Pacific Power trucks has broken down alongside the road.

Oregon National Guard, 1898

This is part of a series of photos showing an encampment of troops at Hood River in 1898 during the Spanish American War. This parade includes a band with the initials "ONG" on the drum, so I'm guessing these were Oregon National Guard troops being called for service in the Philippines. Hopefully some of you can fill us in on the involvement of local troops in this war.

These troops are marching west on Oak Street passing the post office and livery on first street, seen from the same vantage point as this image. I think they are carrying their bedrolls.

Salmon

It's said that long ago the salmon runs were so heavy that you could walk across the rivers on their backs. This concentration of fish is artificial, the result of placing a net at the mouth of a chute. We saw the setup yesterday.
