Almost hear that conversation: "Nope boys, we don't want to get one down there..."
Wonder if that's a post marking an original GLO survey corner? No trees to witness what undoubtedly would've been a "stone in a mound of stone" marking corner!

That's quite the photo. You can hear the quiet except for maybe a covey of quail talking.
No 4x4 quad for these guy to run up and down the hills.
I bet you could still find this same setting and scene virtually unchanged.
Looks like an iron pipe with an attempt to pound it into the ground and then propped up by rocks.

Cut brush on a forest engineering survey crew-Stebco Lumber Co.-on Fir Mt. and over into the Mill Creek country behind The Dalles when a kid. Built a number of stone markings for corners. Doubt if they would pack an iron pipe along to use for a marker. Was always fun to find old corners and witness trees that had been established many years before. Was even more fun to find them when running compass and pacing when working for an old timber cruiser. Amazed me how close we could come sometimes.

Is that the Columbia River off in the distance?
