The name is correct. Hoerlein was an early Crag Rat. This photo is no doubt taken from Cloud Cap or very close to it.. My guess and only a guess is that they were preparing for a downhill race or cross country race from that point.
Beautiful view of Mt. Hood....

Beautiful picture! Isn't this part - or very close to what was just burned in the Dollar Lake and Gnarl Ridge fires?
I notice those trees are definitely not old growth timber. But the terrain had to make for a spectacular run, wherever they are going!

If I'm not mistaken the photo was shot from what would be the SW corner of Cloud Cap Inn from the porch. No idea on the exact date but take a look at Eliot Glacier and the fact that it is level with the West moraine!

Yes, the Gnarl Ridge fire came right up to the door step of Cloud Cap. In fact left hot ember burns here and there.........Dollar Ridge didn't come that way, thankfully.

Dollar Lake fire came close, though - it burned to the treed area across the Eliot (right side of photo), and might have continued to Cloud Cap if not for the Eliot drainage.
It would be interesting to post a current photo from this spot showing the dramatic change in the glacier. Wish we knew the date of the photo.

Good idea Jay-- I posted a photo from the same spot taken 8/27/2011 at my flickr account: http://flic.kr/p/bAZ474

Say, is that a contrail or a scratch on the negative on the left side of Mt. Hood?

Great example of the "Indian Head" near the summit
