This carriage full of folks look pretty happy-- even the driver is smiling. I can't tell if the horse shares the sentiment. The negative is a bit damaged but fortunately the main field is clean. This is what happens when glass plates are stacked against each other, especially without humidity control. With proper enclosures and moderate temperature and humidity variation, glass negatives should be stable for a long time. Early film negatives suffer from decay of the cellulose nitrate backing, and cellulose acetate (early safety film) can shrink and destroy the emulsion. While glass may break easily, we're lucky to have the record of this key period of history on such a stable medium.

What a jolly crowd! It's interesting that many of these older pictures seem to feature the very young and the older set, and fewer with the late teen and early twenties aged crowd.

I'm suspecting this was the 1900 version of a "booze cruise"-- no evidence though!
