Meet the Hood River High School Basketball team of 1919. The man in the middle is Coach Moore. The smiling guy is Ray Slavens. The rest of the names are hard to make out.
It's hard to know if Coach Moore was really tall or if basketball players were shorter in those days. It seems like height would have always been an advantage in a sport requiring you to get a ball in a basket, but these boys must have been pretty good as they were at the state tournament in Eugene.
I'm expecting those shorts and socks to make a comeback any year now.
I had no idea the BB tradition went back that far at HRHS... Coach.Ed Vannett, high top black Converse tennies with blue dot white socks were the rule during my bench days in the late fifties......still pondering Blue Dragons........so where' is the ball?

The January 9, 1919 Glacier printed the names of the basketball players.
Willis Pendergast and Frank Vonder Ahe, Forwards. Melton Folts, Center
Beans Blowers and Ray Slaven, Guards. Still missing one name.
Pendergast and Vonder Ahe were graduated high school in May, 1919.
Interesting note of the times in the January 30, 1919 Glacier.
LINCOLN HIGH TEAM
Athletic interest now centers in a basketball game to be played tomorrow evening between the teams of the high school and that of Lincoln high,
Portland. Although the influenza epidemic has prevented the local quintet
from a display of their skill in any large number of games they are laying
claim to the mid-Columbia champion ship. Fans are looking forward tomorrow night to seeing one of the best exhibition here in many years.
