I don't think I've shared this Anne Lang view of Cloud Cap Inn before. It probably dates to the 1890s, during Cloud Cap's first decade.
There are two women and a dog huddled in the doorway, and someone else just out of the frame. This is a little less formal than most of Lang's images. The bank of clouds did not appear until I started playing with the exposure. It looks like weather is moving in.
[Ed. Note]The Crag Rats are working to replace the CLoud Cap roof. They estimate it will cost $118,000 and need to raise $40,000 from the geberal public. If you can help out, here is the GoFundMe link.
Building a log structure is an art. I wish I could have watched the craftsmen work on this one.

What is the purpose of the ropes?

Bill, I understand the steel cabling was intended to hold the roof down in winter storms. We have some Cloud Cap experts watching this site, so perhaps they will weigh in.

And a pole bracing the chimney. Would be interesting to have an electronic weather observation system up there.

You’re right, Arthur, it was to hold the roof down in high winds.
That west end of the building looks very different now. And that chimney collapsed years before the Crag Rats started leasing it. So there is no fireplace on that end, just a row of windows for storm or sunset watching! There is a wood stove in that room now-the dining room. The cables are no longer there- and when you are there in a storm, cozy in your sleeping bag- it sounds like the roof could lift off....
We will be re-roofing the building this year- it is in dire need. We have had on going fund raisers to help pay for this. If you want to help, go to hoodrivercragrats.org and click the donate button. Note in comments that you want it to go to Cloud Cap roof. Thanks

That donation link isn't quite right-- I'll add a proper link for donations to replace the roof in the notes section.
