It's back to school time, sort of. This view of the Crapper School at Oak Grove dates from 1893, when the school was new. We have the names of the teacher and many of the students.
The teacher is Miss Grace Graham. The students are, from left to right (back row): ?, Ruby Chandler (Dodson), Nellie Wiekham (Taylor), Laura Weikham (Cunning), Grace Lindsay (Arneson), ?, Edith Lindsay (Reed). (front row) Doyle Lindsay, Freda Preggi (Lemming), Susan Kelly (Moore), Herman Preggi.

A battered photo that is well documented.
Miss Graham's parents, James and Margaret came to the area about 1885. They were originally from the Isle of Guernsey. They first settled on a farm in the Mt Hood area, and in later years moved to town. Both are buried at Idlewilde. Grace married a Chris Bartsch and moved to Canada.

The Preggi name ring a bell. The Preggi farm was the property that is now the Hood River Golf Course. Herman Preggi was deputized to put an end to a kidnapping and assault in the vicinity because he was a crack shot with a deer rifle. (See the HISTORY OF HOOD RIVER books. Quite a tale.)
