Unless you're a realtor or work at at title company you probably don't know the names for all the neighborhoods which make up our city. This 1931 Metzger map page shows how the city grew, neighborhood by neighborhood, from the "original town" at 2nd and Oak. Beyond "Hood River Proper" there is Winans Addition, Waucoma Addition, Waucoma Park, Prospect Park, Idlewild Addition, River View, Coe's Additions (1, 2, and 3), Blower's Addition, and the oddly named "Monoheights." There may be good historic reasons for some of the names, though I suspect many of them just sounded good to a developer and a realtor.

There are a lot of names of newer local streets that are named after developer's children. I know many of the kids, most of whom are adults or close to it by now, such as McKinley Court, Zanna Lane, Devon Court, Katie's Way, Andy's Way, Sunderland lane (a local band featuring McKinley). I suppose a generation or two later nobody will know who they were or even think about it.
Like Hazel Lane - who was Hazel?
Of course there are countless older roads named after early families: Swyers, Wells, Dethman, Mainwaring, Martin, Bradley . . . I'm sure there was an Ehrck family, and Tucker . . .

Or Mijos Drive
Too bad the Rd/Street names are approved before there is any input of historical/pioneer names other than from the contractor.

I knew the Sandy river had two mouths, but this map shows the same for Hood River.

Kenn, in yesterday's photo you can see what looks like a lake at the mouth of the HR. I wonder if the sandbar has it backed up. Then over to left if looks like the west channel, running west. A little different than what this map shows.

The Hood River delta changes every winter. I've seen several years when we have had two significant channels. Usually the main channel bends east (upriver) because of the back current off Well's Island-- there's a bit of an eddy in this area which probably shapes the delta significantly.
Here's an aerial view from the same era at low water (winter) showing the major channels we see here and lots of minor ones: http://historichoodriver.com/index.php?showimage=1774

The Hood River Glacier, August 21, 1919, page 7 lists several lots in a notice of Marshal's Sale. Pleasant View Addition and other additions are mentioned, but not shown on the map. I wonder where they were located.
