Sorry for the quality of this photo, but it's a view we don't see often. We're looking west on State Street from just east of Second. The reverse indicates "1920s". I thought this street was paved with the rest of downtown 1913-1914, but this article indicates Kelly Bros. acquired Stewart Hardware in July 1920.

Wonder what the big building up there was?

Arthur, you are correct in thinking that State Street was indeed paved in 1913 - 1914. A new article appeared in the July 24, 1913 Glacier outlining the current efforts of the city to pave Cascade, Oak and State streets. In
September of 1913, efforts were afoot to improve the State Street connection to the steel wagon bridge across the Hood River.
The debris in the street is most likely resulting from installation of the posts on the south side of State Street. Looks like the job is unfinished.,
Nellie, looking further west up the street to fourth street we see the bakery shop (the smaller building) and across 4th street the Knights of Pythias building. I haven't been able find a photograph of the entire building, but I did locate a photo of the partial north side of the building, http://historichoodriver.com/index.php?showimage=1996, published 10-21-2018. I think the building must have been torn down in the 1920's as it was gone by Nov. 1928.

Thanks for researching the paving, LMH.
The entire Pythian building is seen on its last day in this image:

Not too different, 98-ish years later.

Arthur, thank you for posting photo #659 of the burning of the Pythian building. Looks like the fire department is just trying to contain the fire rather than extinguishing the flames. There was a lot history with this building over the years. The usual gathering of citizens observing the fire.
L.E. referenced http://historichoodriver.com/index.php?showimage=32 in her January 31, 2013 posting which gives us a medium range view of the area between 3rd and 4th on State street and further west. It also gives us a look at the drainage system that plagued the streets of HR for years.
