These veterans of the "Great War" posed for the Hood River News in 1958. They are, left to right: Arthur J. Hansen, Cy Sonnichsen, Gordon Boyington, Forrest L. Moe, Claude Collins, Orrie Cushman, and Cecil Cutler. According to the notes they were members of the "12th Company." Hopefully we can get a more precise citation of their service.
Cy Sonnichson was publisher of the Hood River News for many years.
While researching Forrest Moe I filled in a hole in my knowledge of Hood River waterfront history. Forrest Moe was an orchardist in the Odell area. In this 1977 case, Moe and others prevailed at the Oregon Court of Appeals to stop the Port of Hood River from filling "West Cove" which we now call "The Hook." You can read the details, but between the time the time the Port started the fill project and when they applied to finish it, the state instituted "fill permits" and conservation protections. Under those new rules the value of the habitat was cited to deny granting a fill permit.
While these men are no longer with us, there are plenty of veterans in our community to honor today.

I don't know what the "12th Company" might stand for. Maybe something local, but it appears that they were not in the same outfits in World War I. Collins was in Battery E. 65th Artillery and Gordon Boyington were in the same outfit.
I knew Arthur Hansen. His full name was Paul Arthur Frederick Hansen, born in California in 1895. He passed away in 1972 here in Hood River. He was married to Grace Winchell, the daughter of Pine Grove Pioneer Virgin Winchell and they had one daughter Joyce. He was a postal employee. He was in HQ Co. 130th Infantry.

My grandpa Forrest Moe, was stationed at Fort Stevens Oregon, during the war. My guess is that these men were all in the same local group serving there.
