Rodger Nichols is sharing some fine pictures from the early days of Nichols Boat Works. This view of the crew is from 1945. Rodger has identified his grandfather, G.M. "Mark" Nichols in the bottom row, second from the right. His Uncle Vic is to the left of him and his Uncle Frank is second from the right on the top row. The fourth from the right on the top row is Harvey Vernon, who was the foreman for many years. His wife taught school in The Dalles.
We'll see some more views from this collection in coming weeks.

Harvey Vernon came to Hood River from Utah. Yes, his wife, Bernice was a school teacher. One of their daughters was Joy Vernon who married Pete Jubitz. Harv and Bernice were my neighbors when I first came back to Hood River.

George Mark Nichols looks younger and has more hair than in this photo which is one of my favorites.

Bernice "Bea" Vernon was sister to Vilate Jackson, who donated the land for Jackson Park.
Bea also taught in Hood River.

Yes, Mrs. Vernon taught at Park Street School (where playground is). She was my teacher around 1950.

CG might have been a classmate of mine. In 1950, I was in Bea Vernon's 4th grade class at Park Street. I think Mrs. Vernon was one of the best teachers I ever had. She was kind, compassionate, and kept us very busy.

I too had Bea in the 4th grade. You did know your multiplication tables when you left her class! Still remember the graph paper tests every week. My brother had her for 4th and 6th. She must have moved to May Street School.

most interesting posting.....never knew Joy's Dad....also had Joy's mom as my 4th grade teacher......the Port of Cascade Locks enjoys one of these guys products.....fond memories of the boat works. my only memory of the 4th grade was one did NOT mess around in Mrs. Vernon's class. only spent one time in Mr. Chiipley's office at least that I remember

I had Mrs. Vernon for 4th grade at Park Street School and 6th grade (with David) in the gym at what would become "may street junior high school".

I don't recall that Mrs. Vernon (my mother-in-law) ever taught in The Dalles. The Vernon's lived in Barrett, and to my best knowledge, she only taught in Hood River schools. A daily drive to The Dalles was mostly out of the question.

The Jubitz family had nice Hardware store downtown H.R., Nichols boat works was a Hood River concern till moving to Wash. state with the business < i wanst aware of any move to The Dalles but this was years ago.

I worked with a young Captain Mark Nichols in the late fifties early sixties while working for Inland Navigation Company of the Dalles. The job required spotting and loading petroleum barges, and assisting, when necessary, the larger upper river tow boats. This work was, generally, done in the Portland Harbor around the St. Johns Bridge. Tug Mannett was used in this work.
