That is quite the landmark! Must be in the Chenowith area?

Looks like something that would challenge small brains to go knock it down. Have not seen it around either.

I suspect this is much closer to downtown than it seems, and this spot is now surrounded (or replaced) with development. We'll see if someone from The Dalles knows any better.

When you turn off west 6th and onto Snipes [KMart and KFC are at this corner] head up to West 10th and you'll see this rock on the hillside before you come to the stop sign.

Thanks Gary. I was in The Dalles this morning. and came down 10th from the hospital to Fred Meyer. But I hadn't checked today's HHR photo yet.
Sure wish I would have. I would have gone searching.

Here is Google street view from 10th and Snipes. On which side of the church should we be looking?
Harold on 9th July 2019 @ 11:41am
I thought Gary might have been leading us on a "Snipe hunt" but an HHR reader sent me a photograph proving this rock is easily seen from the spot Gary described on Snipes Street and 10th. Now someone needs to climb up through the poison oak and ticks to duplicate this Gifford shot.

So from that intersection, you're looking right at a church. Where is the rock in relation to the church?
Harold on 9th July 2019 @ 4:19pm
That someone would probably be you Arthur, then you can post the modern day view here for all of us to compare.

Above and to the left of the church looking from Snipes and 10th. The rock is half way up the hillside.
Gary Elkinton on 9th July 2019 @ 8:01pm
I stopped today and saw it for the first time. Thanks for posting details on where to look.

Saw it today as well. Not as easy to spot as one might think. As Freud would say, "Sometimes a rock landmark is just a rock landmark."
Harold on 10th July 2019 @ 3:35pm
Well said Harold. I wonder what percent of The Dalles population is aware of this landmark?
I hope you stopped by Pulpit Rock on your visit too.
