As part of Livable Hood River's "Rooted" series I will be telling some stories and showing some photos tomorrow evening loosely titled "The Dogs of Dog River." Drop by the Columbia Center For the Arts tomorrow (Thursday) at 6PM. Admission is free (donations accepted). There will be ten other people telling stories, too! Based on the rehearsal, I can promise the stories are well worth the price of admission. Be advised: some of the stories use adult language.
This negative is from the Ella May Davidson collection, circa 1912. You may recognize the girl in the foreground, who we've seen in several of Ella May Davidson's photos. She is Horatio Davidson's niece, Mariwhitmor Whitehead.
Personally I find this somewhat of a disturbing photo. That man has no respect for the sweet little dog.

Are they hunting for something?

There's a famous picture of LBJ holding his beagle by its ears. He got a lot of flak for it.

I remember the picture of LBJ and his beagle. Don't know if that harmed the beagle or not. But do know that many animals move their young from one location to another by picking them up by the nape of the neck, so doubt if this dog was harmed. Would be interesting to know what is taking place in this picture.

Maybe they were looking for the dog? He picks it up and says "I found it!" ;-)

Any idea where this picture was taken based on the ridge line?

I am going to guess that the picture is of Mt Defiance taken from somewhere in the lower valley. Will have to check it out on a clear day.
Looks like the area burned no too many years before the picture was taken. Would be interesting to come up with burn maps of the valley from the early settlement era.

Maybe we need to attend the "Dogs of Dog River" lecture to find out what is going on.

This is the way to pick up a small dog. Ever notice how momma dogs pick up their babies? Also , you will not get bit! Not disturbing to me.

I think this may be the dee area. The hills in the background look to be middle mountain (Gilhouley)
