Here's a good view of Davidson Fruit Company's apple box factory, circa 1898. The factory was locate at the present site of the parking lot for the Elks building, between 3rd and 4th Streets at Columbia/Industrial. Horatio Davidson is the 3rd from the right.
By my analysis, the lot where this building sat has been vacant longer than any other lot in downtown. I believe it has been empty since 1904, though it has had temporary uses like storing power poles or parking.
