Eastbound east of Umatilla?

I am thinking he may have been hunting, just what I don't know, maybe deer, and was off over in eastern Oregon or southeastern Oregon somewhere. I would imagine that hill side might have various hues of color if it were a colored photo.

Looks really familiar. I'm thinking it's on the way towards John Day, just before the intersection with HWY 20.

I thinking somewhat the same area as Russ. I was going to say between Mitchell and Spray.

If you can locate it, it might be a good place to watch the eclipse this summer.

Memory puts it at Hat Rock park on the Columbia east of Umatilla on the old 30, but if at that location seems he would have photographed Hat Rock as well. Wish I could print this and check the hill from the WA side.

Don't remember any deep sedimentary deposits in northern Oregon anywhere near the Columbia, such deposits lay to the south in a large area centered on the Painted Hills. Since the road looks to be paved I would guess it has to be what is today US26

I suspect you can see the John Day River in the right hand corner of Alva's photo.
Here is a photo of Cathedral Rock, with possibly a road sign on the same corner.

Given the almost 70 years difference in the picture date and the slightly different angle of the photograph, I'd say you have nailed it. Very nice work L.E.

Great locating, LE, many pictures of Cathedral rock confirm it ~
