Neat view. Would have been fun to work with those oldtimers and learn how they punched a big hole through a mountain with the limited experience and primitive equipment with which they had to work.

This tunnel eliminated the original construction around the point at the Hood River-Wasco county line adjacent to I-84. It was constructed with wood portals in 1903 that were replaced with the present concrete in 1922..

while off the topic of this picture. Saturday I gave my grand girls from Seattle a tour of my HR growing up haunts/history and one was to show them the Butler Bank building and where our Belmont irrigation pump house originally was located as a bond sales building during WW II. the war bond rally picture posted 8-15-2012 was sent to them showing it in the bank location. while our place on Belmont appears to be a real mess, the pump house is clearly on view from Belmont.
