This home at 401 Montello was built for Tom and Agnes Cunning sometime before 1910. It was later purchased by E.L. Scobee and extensively remodeled to the Craftsman style home we see today. If you look at it real closely you'll see the SE corner of the house is much as it was in this pre-1910 view.

I've been in this house when Pete and Joy Jubitz lived there back in the 1960's or 70's.

Thomas Cunning was from Ohio. He had lots of money by the time he came to Hood River. He was in the milling business back east and also served in the Civil War. He was married prior to Agnes to a Mary Kinsey who died in 1889 and then he married Agnes. By the time he arrived in Hood River, he was basically retired, but did dabble in real estate and was a money lender.
This house was later the Sheppard home, as I remember it.
So sad those intricate upper reaches were removed.

The 1905 Illustrated History of Oregon says Mr. and Mrs. Cunning have a very lovely residence on the top of the hill from which they have a "surpassing view."

If you click on the tag Scobee, I think there is another view of this house.

Wonder if the third floor was a later addition, possibly for additional family. The box shape does not add to the beauty of the home but what a view it must have had.

I believe the Wayne Annala family also lived here at one time.

That is where I grew up! I loved living there! Fun times, good memories!
