Our road trip continues with a stop near Bend. This great image of an approaching storm was taken somewhere near Pilot Butte.
Without a network of service stations like Rourk's Store a road trip would have been impossible. Central Oregon's pioneers may have been able to live off the land, but an automobile requires frequent refueling. Careful planning must have been required to bridge the distances between fuel sources.

I think there are horse hoof prints in the dust.
We bought gas from one of those pumps. It wasn't as tall as the one in the photo. The owner hand cranked the gas by hand and there was a clear bulb that showed the level of the fuel.
That is all I remember about it. And the owner talked the entire time.

A possibly more accurate location: The tire sign on the building says "E. G. Rourk, Crescent, Ore." From the Bend Bulletin, July 27, 1910. "E. G. Rourk has put In a branch grocery at Lake Odell for the accommodation of camping parties. The store Is in charge of Mrs. Rourk."
Lake Odell is on Highway 58 between Crescent and Oakridge. This could be the main store in Crescent or the branch at Odell Lake. The vegetation looks right for either location.
