We've seen this view several times before, but this one's a little special. In the summer of 1982 ODOT replaced the 1918 concrete arch bridge from the original Columbia River Highway with the current bridge over the Hood River. They took an extensive set of images showing the old bridge, the new bridge, and the construction/demolition project. This one is from May of 1982.
Note the "Grizzly Bear Pizza" on Second Street, now known as Pietros.

The house in the upper left hand corner is where I grew up.

Hmmmm, I don't remember the Grizzly Bear.
Boy, both ends of the old bridge had a sharp corner.
I am surprised the river is that low for May.
Also wondering if that house in the upper left hand corner survived Dan K's growing up years.

LE, the curves onto the older steel bridge were even sharper. You can still drive under the RR bridge to the east side abutments of both previous highway bridges.

The Grizzly Bear was the first pizza parlor, before Pietro's. Before that it was the old Safeway Store.

Pietro's is in what was Safeway's second Hood River store, Safeway is now in their fourth HR.location. They once had a store in Cascade Locks and during dam building days one at Bonneville..

So, Kenn, where was Safeway's first location in Hood River?
Bill Seaton on 20th August 2015 @ 3:17pm
Bill...I was going to say the answer to that question is easy, but Arthur doesn't have a tag for Safeway.
So it wasn't easy.
I remember a discussion of previous Safeways. David talks about it in photo #701.

The first Safeway that I recall was up on Oak Street.

Here is another Safeway discussion.

Is this the one you remember Charlott?

Wouldn't that bridge have made wonderful continuation of the bike/hike trail from Cascade Locks and then on to Mosier.

Charlott is right, the first Safeway in my picture is on Oak Street, across the street and west of the Mt Hood Hotel. West of if I see a depot (appears to say Stage Depot), Hood River Auto Parts, a street, a hotel, gift store, theater (?) and Keir's Drugs. Across from the hotel I see Herman Kress Rexall Drug Store on the corner and west of it JC Penney.Co.
In my 1948 photo I see a Chrysler Plymouth dealer has taken over Safeway, the depot and Hood River auto parts locations.
Not being a Hood Rivergonian, Hood Riverite or whatever, this is all I can come up with.
I can bring the photos along with a book I have for Arthur when I come up for the fly in if there is interest.

I thought our first pizza parlor was Debiaso's out by the 24 flavors ice cream place.
